Introduction

On a visit to the Netherlands in late 2013, I bought my food at supermarkets, mostly at the Albert Heijn chain.

The List

Foods that I bought:
  • 800 ml Groentsoep (vegetable soup) = 1.89 €
  • 450g maaltijd (prepared meal) of bami goreng i.e. pasta and ham = 3.5 €
  • 1kg Albert Heijn muesli = 1.67 €
  • 800 ml Kipsoep (chicken soup) = 1.98 €
  • Pickwick tea (tasted horrible) = 1 €
  • Generic chocolate bar (OK quality) = 1 €
  • Tomaat Groentsoep (tomato-vegetable soup) = 1 €
  • Antacid = 3 €
Foods that I didn't buy but for which I recorded the prices anyway:
  • 1kg spaghetti = 1.89 €
  • 490g spaghetti sauce = 1.79 €

The only transportation that I paid for was the train from Schiphol airport to Amsterdam and back: 4.40 € each way.

Comparisons

The spaghetti that I didn't buy was 1.89 € per 1 kg. That comes to US $1.23 per pound, which is a bit more expensive than in the USA where it costs about $1 per pound.

The muesli was a good deal. It was good quality, and at 1.67 € for 1 kg, that was only about $1.10 per pound. In the USA, good muesli usually costs 3 to 4 times that.
