Red Herring

A red herring is simply a statement offered to resolve an issue, but that does not address the matter being disputed.

There are many kinds of red herring arguments, including ad hominem, appeal to authority, appeal to fear, et cetera.

Its form
  • There exists Proposition P.
  • There exists unrelated argumentation A.
  • Therefore Proposition P is true or false.

Weaknesses

One needs only to point out that the arguer is trying to distract from the issue at hand.
